bookofjoe's Favorite Thing: Folding Wooden Tray Table

I've used these since forever: I currently have four (4) deployed at various places around my house.

Full disclosure: one is next to my treadmill desk and the other three (3) are on the sides of my main TV watching chair.

FunFact: I've always taken one on trips where I drive to visit and stay with people 'cause they're so darn handy as bedside tables etc.: invariably the peeps I stay with ask if I can leave the little table behind and get another one for myself.

The answer's always "Yes," of course.

So convenient, they fold flat and are easily carried/transported.

FunFact #2: Back when I discovered these wonderful tables they cost $5 at Bed Bath & Beyond — that amazed me, I thought to myself "How can they make a profit at this price?"

Anyway, they're very sturdy (at least those I still have that I got 15-25 years ago at BBB).

Set of 2: $43.48.

  1. BAck in the 60's we had a set of four that came with a carrier rack. Very common and very handy. I don't know if they still exist in this form. We used them as occasional tables, for things like eating while watching TV or entertaining unexpected guests, and so forth. And as you note, they were quite simple and durable.

  2. Yes, TV tables still come as a set with a rack. We have such a set. We went for a larger TV table to have more room for food ... dinner plate, bread plate, utensils, condiments, maybe even a glass. Pancakes or waffles usually require two plates, one for the pancake or waffle and the other for eggs and bacon or sausage.

I am currently working on making a "desk" (more like a table) consisting of a 20"x30" wood board and four legs. It's costing me over $76 in materials and lot of labor and will be nowhere factory perfect. I was aiming for portability. We'll see how it goes. At minimum I can always point to my diy desk and talk about my experiment, what I thought vs. reality.

I am attempting diy only after searching on the internet for quite some time for one already made. There are several simple desks that can be had for $20 but they don't meet my criterium of being "one board + four sticks." The closest one to being "one board + four sticks" is around $50USD. The aluminum roll top camp tables are usually too low or too large and way too expensive but they are winners in the "portability" department.
