Reading in Bed Throwdown: Kindle Paperwhite v Kindle App on iPhone

This comparison happened when I was sitting around doing something close to nothing (but different than the day before) and noticed the Kindle app on a screen of unused apps on my iPhone.

My reading in bed has been on the latest version of the Kindle Paperwhite since I finally abandoned paper books about a year ago because they were too heavy — especially hardcovers — and no matter how quietly and carefully I turned the pages, somehow my calico cat Vanta picked up the faint noises and had her sleep disturbed, not surprising since her furry little head is only about two feet from my book.

Long story short: I called up my current bedtime book ("Transcription" by Kate Atkinson) on my phone's Kindle app and was startled to see how appealing and easy to read it was, even as it appeared in white-on-black due to some setting.

The text seems sharper on the phone, and it's far easier to navigate on the phone than on the Paperwhite, where I constantly advance pages when I don't intend to, and have a difficult time going back to where I was.

Also, my comprehension seems better with the phone as does my retention of what I read.

One more thing: putting a virtual bookmark up is effortless on the phone whereas its takes several steps and is sometimes fiddly on the Paperwhite.

Don't take my word for it: look at the photos up top of page 122 of my current read, Kate Atkinson's "Transcription."

Wait a sec — what's that song I'm hearing?

I prefer black print on a white or cream background. I do not like reading white print on a black background. That is my one complaint with Grokipedia.
